After Dark

Xi'an Nightlife Guide

Xi'an at night is a different city. The City Wall glows with red lanterns, the Muslim Quarter fills with smoke from charcoal grills, and rooftop bars offer cocktails above the ancient skyline. Here's where to go after dark.

Night Markets

Muslim Quarter (回民街)

5 PM - midnight+

The undisputed king of Xi'an night food. Sajinqiao and Dapiyuan streets come alive after 7 PM. Lamb skewers, biangbiang noodles, persimmon cakes, sour plum juice.

Tip: Go hungry. Don't eat at the first stall — walk 200m deeper for better prices and more authentic food.

Yongxing Fang (永兴坊)

10 AM - 10 PM

Less touristy alternative to Muslim Quarter. Focuses on Shaanxi regional specialties from different cities. Watch chefs make youmo, roujiamo, and liangpi from scratch.

Tip: Get a rechargeable card at the entrance — all vendors use it. Refund unused balance at exit.

East New Street Night Market

7 PM - midnight

Local favorite. Cheap street food, clothes, phone accessories. Less touristy, more authentic. Great for people-watching.

Tip: This is where real Xi'an residents eat. Prices are 30-50% cheaper than Muslim Quarter.

  • Watch for pickpockets in the Muslim Quarter after dark — keep valuables in front pockets.
  • Taxis from bars at 2 AM may overcharge. Use Didi for fixed prices.
  • The City Wall closes at 10 PM (8 PM in winter). Plan your cycling accordingly.

Nightlife by Type: Choose Your Scene

Rooftop Bars — Best for Couples & Groups

Xi'an's rooftop bar scene has grown since 2022. The best are inside the City Wall near South Gate, with views of the lit-up wall and Bell Tower. Expect cocktails at $9-$13. Dress code is smart casual. Reservations recommended on weekends.

Live Music Venues — Best for Music Lovers

Xi'an has a thriving indie music scene around the university district. Small venues host folk, rock, and traditional Chinese fusion. Cover charges $4-$12. Shows typically start at 9 PM.

Night Markets — Best for Solo Travelers & Budget

The Muslim Quarter after 7 PM is the classic. Dongxin Street Night Market is where locals go after 10 PM — more skewers, less chaos. Walking through a night market at full energy is unforgettable.

Cultural Shows — Best for Families & First-Timers

The Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show recreates court entertainment from 1,300 years ago. Elaborate costumes, traditional instruments, graceful choreography. Tickets $30-$60. Book through trip.com or your hotel.
